18-year-old Jillian Ludwig was a freshman at Belmont University who was killed in a heartbreaking event earlier this week. The young freshman was taking a walk on a trail at Edgehill Memorial Gardens Park, which is near her university’s Nashville campus.
“Sadly, Jillian Ludwig passed away during the night,” the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department announced in a press release they issued.
Ludwig was hit in the head with a stray bullet while she was walking the trail. A suspect has been in police custody in relation to the shooting, which happened around 2:24 p.m. when a man on a street opened at a moving car near a parking lot.
Ludwig was shot but not found until an hour later when someone came across her collapsed on the trail, and immediately called emergency services. She was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in “extremely critical condition,” according to police.
Ludwig’s death has impacted a lot of people, especially in her university. The university’s president described the late student in heartwarming words. He called her a music lover who was also an “avid runner” who enjoyed being outside. She was studying Music Business at the university and was a vocalist in a band.
Ludwig’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with her medical expenses and other end-of-life costs. They wrote in the fundraiser’s description, “Jillian’s life was a symphony of joy and love that was tragically cut short as a brilliant student, musician, and, most importantly, an irreplaceable part of our family.”
