Patrick Mahomes, star quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, has decided not to endorse any political candidates for the upcoming presidential election.
The decision follows recent comments made by Donald Trump, who referred to Patrick’s wife, Brittany Mahomes, as “a big Trump fan” in contrast to Taylor Swift, who recently endorsed Kamala Harris.
Patrick Mahomes on why he won’t endorse Donald Trump or Kamala Harris
Patrick Mahomes, who is focused on his role as a football player, explained that he does not want to use his platform to promote any political figure.
“I don’t want my place and my platform to be used to endorse a candidate or do whatever, either way,” the Super Bowl-winning quarterback shared, according to ABC, before heading out to practice for the upcoming game against Cincinnati.
Patrick added that he would rather encourage people to participate in the electoral process, saying, “I think my place is to inform people to get registered to vote. It’s to inform people to do their own research and then make the best decision for them and their family.”
Why is Donald Trump praising Brittany Mahomes?
The discussion about Patrick Mahomes’ political stance comes after Donald Trump referenced his wife, Brittany Mahomes, during an interview with Fox News.
Responding to Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Kamala Harris, Trump commented, “It was just a question of time. She [Swift] couldn’t possibly endorse Biden … You look at Biden, you couldn’t possibly endorse him.”
Trump continued by saying, “I actually like Mrs Mahomes much better. She’s a big Trump fan. I like Brittany. I think Brittany is great,” Trump added, contrasting Swift’s endorsement with his claim about Brittany’s political leanings.
Last month, Trump started mentioning Brittany after she liked, then unliked, an Instagram post by the Republican presidential nominee that detailed the “2024 GOP platform.”
Following this, Trump expressed his gratitude on Truth Social, posting, “I want to thank the beautiful Brittany for so strongly defending me.”
Brittany has since stayed out of the political spotlight except to respond to critics on social media, saying in a post, “To be a hater as an adult, you have to have some deep rooted issues you refuse to heal from childhood.”
Patrick Mahomes’ broader idea of unity in America
When asked about his political views, Patrick Mahomes, the three-time Super Bowl champion, chose to keep his personal beliefs private.
Instead, he discussed the broader idea of unity in the country, reflecting on his experience growing up in baseball locker rooms.
“In political times, people are going to use stuff here and there, but I can’t let that affect how I go about my business every single day of my life, and trying to live it to the best of my ability,” Patrick stated.
Reflecting on unity, he added, “… how I’ve grown up in baseball locker rooms is people can come together and achieve something, and achieve a common goal.”
“We talked about it a while back. If we can do that as a nation, we can get the best out of each other, so that’s something I do every single day,” he added.
