One Formula 1 driver has labelled Max Verstappen the GOAT of the sport following his rain ‘masterclass’ by winning the Brazil Grand Prix from 17th on the grid.

Verstappen put on a dazzling display in Sao Paulo, as he carved his way through the field to win his first Grand Prix in 10 races.

A combination of pure wet weather skill and a fortunately timed red flag meant Verstappen stormed to the front of the field despite starting at the back, meanwhile, Lando Norris went from 1st to 6th.

With Norris starting at the front and Verstappen so far back, Brazil looked like the perfect opportunity for the Brit to really put the pressure on.

Norris leaves Brazil 62 points behind Verstappen in the championship, and Verstappen can seal his fourth title at the next grand prix in Las Vegas.

Rain is often labelled the ‘great equaliser’ in Formula 1, with the driver making the biggest difference rather than the machine underneath them.

With that in mind, it’s fair to say Verstappen showed exactly why he’s a three-time world champion, and one F1 star even named the 27-year-old the GOAT for his wet weather display.

Underneath Verstappen’s Instagram post celebrating the win, Nico Hulkenberg made his feelings very clear by commenting a series of goat emojis.

Rather awkwardly, Hulkenberg’s comment shows up right next to Lewis Hamilton, who also congratulated Verstappen for his performance.

Hulkenberg has raced 224 times in F1, making him a respected member of the grid so a bold claim like this will certainly be noticed by others.

Verstappen is heading for his fourth consecutive world title which would put him three behind Lewis Hamilton’s record total of seven.

The Red Bull driver burst onto the scene at just 17 years old when he made his debut in F1 and became the sport’s youngest-ever winner aged just 18 at the 2016 Barcelona Grand Prix.

Verstappen won his first title in 2021 in rather controversial circumstances but has made sure to crown himself champion with races to spare ever since.
