Scuderia Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur commented on Lewis Hamilton’s performance, suggesting he “never worried” about it.

2024 was Lewis Hamilton’s worst season in terms of Drivers’ Championship result to date. The seven-time World Champion finished in P7, right behind his teammate George Russell.

P7 by itself might not have been so concerning as Mercedes didn’t have the pace to match their rivals for most of the 2024 season.

However, Hamilton lost the head-to-head qualifying battle to George Russell 6-24 (including sprint qualifying sessions). In race head-to-head comparison, he lost 10-20 (including sprints).

The 39-year-old himself didn’t always have the best mindset, and at one point, he told the media: “I’m not fast anymore.” When Ferrari’s team principal, Fred Vasseur, was asked about this comment, he replied:

“Ask that question to [George] Russell on Sunday [in Abu Dhabi]. It is on Sunday that you are scoring points first, and I am not worried at all about this.”

Lewis Hamilton showed on several occasions throughout 2024 that he still can deliver when he has a competitive car. The final Grand Prix of the season in Abu Dhabi was one such example.

Although the seven-time world champion had an unlucky qualifying and started the race from P16, ten positions behind George Russell, he still crossed the finish line ahead of his teammate in the end (in P4). Vasseur continued:

“He has had tough moments in quali, but the quality of Abu Dhabi was linked to the performance of Lewis.”
“He had very good races in Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi, and I was never, never worried about the situation.”
“I don’t want to blame Lewis or Mercedes but this situation is not easy to manage and if it is not going well, the relationship can suffer.”
“It was not very well in his mind, he was clear about this in Brazil, but he did very well in the last couple of events, so I am not worried.”
