Mariska Hargitay, known for her role as Detective Olivia Benson in “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,”

had her first biological child at the age of 42. However, she and her husband, Peter Hermann,

had always wanted a big family, so they turned to adoption to fulfill their dreams.

A Difficult Decision

After struggling to conceive again, Mariska and Peter decided to explore adoption. They believed that being a mother didn’t necessarily mean being biologically related to your child. Their journey was not easy, with many false starts and heartbreaks along the way.

One day, they met a pregnant young woman who was considering adoption. Mariska was even present in the delivery room and assisted in the birth. They named their daughter Amaya, meaning “princess,” “warrior,” and “night rain” in different languages.

A Surprising Miracle

Just when they thought their family was complete, fate had other plans. Their dear friend Andy passed away, and shortly after, they received a call from their lawyer about a premature baby boy who was in need of a loving home. Without any hesitation, they welcomed Andrew into their family. He was named after their late friend and became an unexpected but cherished addition.

Embracing Differences

Mariska loves raising children from different backgrounds. She embraces the uniqueness of each child and supports their individual interests and talents. Andrew, born prematurely, took “Big Muscles” classes to help with his development. Amaya, on the other hand, loves music and can’t resist dancing to the beat. All the children also attend swimming classes to ensure their safety in the water.

A Lesson in Parenthood

Mariska believes that her children have made her a better parent. They have taught her the importance of listening and understanding each child’s needs. Her husband, Peter, is her guiding star, and her children are her greatest teachers. Despite the challenges they faced on their adoption journey, Mariska knows that her family is perfect just the way it is.
