The Formula 1 paddock is buzzing after former F1 driver and analyst Jolyon Palmer delivered a fascinating analysis following practice sessions at the Australian Grand Prix.
While most attention has been focused on Scuderia Ferrari appearing strong at the start of the 2026 season, Palmer highlighted an unexpected twist.
According to him, Lewis Hamilton might actually be more competitive than his teammate Charles Leclerc around the Albert Park circuit.
And the reason has surprised many fans.
A Difficult First Season at Ferrari
Hamilton joined Ferrari in 2025 in one of the biggest driver transfers in Formula 1 history.
But the move did not produce immediate success.
The seven-time champion described 2025 as his āworst season everā, finishing with 156 points and ending the year fifth in the standings.
Meanwhile, Leclerc scored 242 points and clearly dominated their internal battle.
The statistics were brutal:
-
Qualifying head-to-head: 19ā5 in favor of Leclerc
-
Grand Prix results: 18ā3 for Leclerc
By the end of the season, many believed the 28-year-old Monegasque driver had firmly established himself as Ferrariās leading driver.
Why Melbourne Could Be Different
However, Palmer believes the SF-26 Ferrari and the unique characteristics of Albert Park could shift the balance.
Speaking on F1TV, Palmer explained that Hamilton appeared more comfortable in the car than he had been at any point since joining Ferrari.
āHamilton looks comfortable. In that relative battle between Hamilton and Leclerc, this is the most competitive Iāve seen Lewis for a long time.ā
According to Palmer, the carās handling in Melbourne seems to suit Hamiltonās preferred driving style ā particularly his aggressive braking and corner entry technique.
That combination may allow Hamilton to extract more performance from the car on this specific circuit.
Practice Sessions Hint at a Close Battle
During Free Practice 1, Leclerc finished ahead of Hamilton as Ferrari locked out the top two positions.
But the situation shifted slightly in Free Practice 2, where Hamilton responded with a stronger performance relative to his teammate.
Both Ferrari drivers were still behind Australian star Oscar Piastri, who topped the session.
Yet Palmerās analysis focused less on the overall times and more on the internal Ferrari battle, where Hamilton appeared significantly closer to Leclerc than expected.
A Track That Has Brought Hamilton Success Before
Interestingly, Melbourne has historically been an important track for Hamilton.
He has won the Australian Grand Prix twice:
-
2008 with McLaren
-
2015 with Mercedes
Both seasons ultimately ended with Hamilton becoming world champion.
While two wins in seventeen attempts may not seem dominant, those victories came in years when Hamilton went on to secure the title ā a fact many fans find symbolic.
Ferrariās Biggest Concern: Maintaining Momentum
For Ferrari, the bigger question extends beyond Melbourne.
The team famously started the 2022 season strongly, even winning the Australian Grand Prix that year with Leclerc.
At one stage, Leclerc held a 46-point lead over Max Verstappen.
Yet by the end of the season, Verstappen had secured the championship by a massive 146-point margin.
Ferrari will be desperate to avoid a repeat of that dramatic collapse.
A Season Full of Questions
As the lights prepare to go out in Melbourne, several storylines are already emerging:
-
Can Hamilton rediscover championship form at Ferrari?
-
Will Leclerc maintain his status as Ferrariās lead driver?
-
Can Ferrari sustain early-season performance throughout the year?
Jolyon Palmerās analysis may have revealed an early clue.
For the first time since joining Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton might finally have the tools ā and the confidence ā to challenge his teammate on equal terms.
And if that battle ignites inside the Ferrari garage, the 2026 season could become one of the most dramatic Formula 1 championships in years.
