This signing signals the team’s commitment to shoring up their offensive line as they prepare for the final stretch of the 2024 season.
Why This Signing Makes Sense
D.J. Humphries brings both experience and talent to the Chiefs. A former first-round pick (24th overall) out of Florida in 2015, Humphries earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2021.
Despite recent injuries, including an ACL tear and back issues, the Chiefs are taking a low-risk approach with high upside. The deal is worth $2 million, with incentives that could push it to $4.5 million—very manageable for Kansas City’s cap situation.

This signing adds depth to a critical position. With left tackle Wanya Morris battling injuries, Humphries offers insurance and could play as early as tomorrow against the Panthers. While some fans might question why the team didn’t opt to re-sign Donovan Smith, a member of last season’s Super Bowl-winning squad, the Chiefs’ front office clearly believes Humphries is the better option.
Looking at the Numbers
Humphries’ career has been a tale of two phases: earlier as a stronger run-blocker and more recently as a pass-blocking specialist. Pro Football Focus (PFF) grades show his versatility:
- 2023: Offensive grade: 62.5 | Pass blocking: 68.4
- 2020 (Career Best): Offensive grade: 88.3 | Pass blocking: 79.9 | Run blocking: 90.8
If the Chiefs can get anywhere close to the 2020 version of Humphries, this signing will prove to be a massive upgrade.
Why This Move Matters
The Chiefs’ offensive line has been a critical factor in their postseason success—or failure—in recent years. Back in Super Bowl LV, weaknesses at the tackle position led to a crushing loss to the Buccaneers. With this signing, Kansas City ensures they’re better prepared this time around.
Looking ahead, the addition of Humphries could elevate the Chiefs’ offensive potential. With star running back Isiah Pacheco returning soon and a balanced offensive approach, Kansas City is poised to finish the season strong.
One Word to Describe This Signing?
For me, it’s “satisfied.” Humphries is a proven talent, and this move shows the Chiefs are serious about addressing potential weaknesses.
