F1 NEWS!! Lewis Hamilton and F1 drivers are ANGRY over Verstappen’s UNACCEPTABLE driving style at the Spanish GP !!

The 2025 Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has sparked intense controversy in the Formula 1 paddock, with Max Verstappen’s aggressive driving tactics drawing sharp criticism from fellow drivers, notably seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

Verstappen, the four-time world champion, found himself at the center of a storm following a contentious incident with Mercedes driver George Russell, which many, including Hamilton, deemed unacceptable. The fallout has reignited debates about Verstappen’s racing style, with accusations of deliberate and dangerous maneuvers casting a shadow over his undeniable talent.

The drama unfolded in the race’s closing stages when Verstappen, instructed by his Red Bull team to cede a position to Russell after gaining an advantage by going off-track at Turn 1, appeared to intentionally collide with the Mercedes driver at Turn 5.

The stewards issued Verstappen a 10-second time penalty and three penalty points on his FIA super license, bringing him to 11 points—dangerously close to the 12-point threshold that triggers an automatic one-race ban. George Russell, vocal in his disapproval, described the move as “totally unnecessary” and likened it to “bad online racing,” emphasizing that such behavior is unbecoming of a driver of Verstappen’s caliber. He further expressed concern for younger fans, stating, “It’s sad for all the young kids looking up to us, aspiring to be Formula One drivers.”

Lewis Hamilton, who endured a frustrating race himself, finishing a distant sixth after struggling with his Ferrari’s lack of pace, did not hold back in his assessment of Verstappen’s actions. Speaking to the media, Hamilton called the incident “disappointing” and suggested that the FIA’s leniency toward Verstappen’s repeated aggressive tactics sets a dangerous precedent. He referenced past encounters, such as the 2021 Brazilian Grand Prix, where Verstappen ran him off the track, and the infamous 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, where Verstappen’s brake-testing maneuver was widely criticized. Hamilton’s remarks echo a growing sentiment among drivers that Verstappen’s win-at-all-costs mentality often crosses ethical boundaries, compromising the spirit of fair racing.

Other drivers and pundits have joined the chorus of criticism. Nico Rosberg, the 2016 world champion and Sky Sports F1 pundit, labeled Verstappen’s collision with Russell as a “slam-dunk” case for disqualification, arguing that the 10-second penalty was insufficient for what appeared to be a deliberate act. McLaren’s Lando Norris, who has had his own run-ins with Verstappen, notably in the 2024 Mexico race, hinted at frustration with the FIA’s inconsistent rulings, stating, “The governing bodies need to call a spade a spade.” Even Red Bull’s team principal, Christian Horner, while defending his driver’s competitive spirit, urged Verstappen to “keep his nose clean” in upcoming races to avoid a ban, acknowledging the precariousness of his 11 penalty points.

Verstappen, however, remained defiant. In post-race interviews, he downplayed the incident as a “misjudgment” driven by frustration, blaming unclear racing guidelines for creating confusion. “What is allowed, what isn’t, is not very natural,” he told reporters, deflecting criticism and refusing to apologize. When pressed about Russell’s comments regarding the example set for younger drivers, Verstappen retorted dismissively, “OK, well I’ll bring some tissues next time.” His refusal to engage with Russell directly, stating, “I have nothing to say to him,” only fueled perceptions of arrogance, further alienating peers who admire his skill but question his sportsmanship.

The incident has broader implications for Verstappen’s 2025 championship campaign. With McLaren’s Oscar Piastri securing a commanding victory in Spain, extending his lead to 49 points over Verstappen, and teammate Lando Norris in second, 39 points ahead, Verstappen’s title hopes are under pressure. His RB21 car has been described as difficult to handle, and his aggressive driving may reflect mounting frustration with Red Bull’s relative lack of pace compared to McLaren. Upcoming races in Canada and Austria, tracks better suited to Red Bull’s characteristics, will be critical for Verstappen to regain ground—provided he avoids further penalties.

The Spanish Grand Prix has also highlighted deeper issues within Formula 1’s governance. Critics argue that the FIA’s failure to consistently penalize deliberate actions risks normalizing dangerous driving. Johnny Herbert, a former F1 driver, praised Russell’s “damn perfect” overtaking move but condemned Verstappen’s retaliation as “indefensible,” warning that punishing bold but fair overtakes could “kill racing.” Meanwhile, Hamilton’s struggles at Ferrari, compounded by team orders to let teammate Charles Leclerc pass, have added to the narrative of a challenging season for the veteran, who admitted to learning “absolutely nothing” from the recent triple-header.

As the F1 circus heads to Montreal, the spotlight remains on Verstappen. Will he temper his approach to avoid a ban, or will his uncompromising style continue to spark controversy? For Hamilton and his peers, the hope is for a return to racing that prioritizes skill and fairness over reckless aggression. The sport’s integrity, and its appeal to future generations, may depend on it.
