Lewis Hamilton has slammed Ferrari’s decisions in a furious radio tirade during the Miami Grand Prix. The British driver was visibly angry after the team made a controversial decision during the race.
His teammate Charles Leclerc was sitting in seventh place, while an increasingly impatient Hamilton was right behind him in eighth.
Hamilton said: “Do you want me to sit here for the whole race?”, to which the engineer replied: “I’ll call you back in a bit.” Hamilton then added: “I stepped aside in China when you were on a different strategy,” before sarcastically saying: “Ha!
Take a tea break while you’re at it!” The driver then criticised Leclerc, saying: “This is not good teamwork. That’s all I’ll say.”
Hamilton failed to pass his teammate Leclerc, leading to escalating frustration. After being informed that Carlos Sainz was 1.4 seconds behind him, Hamilton sarcastically replied: “Do you want me to let him pass too?” Hamilton finished the race in eighth, continuing a disappointing start to the season with Ferrari. Hamilton’s best finish so far this season was fifth in Bahrain.
Oscar Piastri won the race in Miami, with Lando Norris finishing second and George Russell third. Hamilton responded more positively after the race, saying he “had a lot of fun during the race,” as reported by Sky Sports. However, he acknowledged that Ferrari is not where he wants to be. “I knew it would be difficult today to start from 12th. We are not where we want to be. We are lacking a lot of speed, we have lost performance in the last few races. We know where the problem is and we are just waiting for a solution to recover some of this loss.”
Hamilton added: “For us to be at the end of the top ten is not easy at all for the whole team. When I went onto the Medium tyre I was feeling really optimistic. The car was really starting to come alive and I thought I had a chance to make up ground, I was hoping for a Safety Car, but it never came.”
Reflecting on his radio comments, Hamilton tried to explain the situation. “I lost a lot of time behind Charles and at that moment I said to myself, ‘Come on, let’s make a quick and concise decision, let’s not waste time’. I’m sure some people didn’t like some of those comments, but you have to understand that it’s frustrating. People say much worse things than I say. It was more of a sarcastic thing than anything else. Now I’m not frustrated anymore. We’ll work internally, discuss and keep pushing.”
Hamilton’s frustration seems to be a consequence of the difficulty of adapting to the current situation at Ferrari, where performances are not up to expectations. Despite the difficulties, Hamilton reiterated the importance of maintaining a positive and constructive approach, stressing that the team must remain focused on improving.
This difficult phase for Hamilton with Ferrari also highlights the gap that exists between the team’s current performance and his ambitions to fight for the top. The seven-time world champion is in a moment of transition, trying to find the speed and solutions needed to bring Ferrari back to the forefront of the championship.
Even though the current situation is not what he had hoped for, Hamilton is determined not to give up. His post-race comments reflect his desire to stay focused on future progress and to remain calm, despite the difficulties encountered. His experience and leadership will be crucial for the future of the team, which faces significant challenges to return to fighting for the top positions.
In conclusion, the Miami race highlighted Ferrari’s difficulties and Hamilton’s frustration, but also his determination not to be overwhelmed by the difficulties. The season is still long and the team has time to correct the course, but it will be essential for them to solve the technical and strategic problems to become competitive again in the next races.
