Jason Kelce has got his wish. Well, kind of. The iconic gaming franchise Backyard Sports, which created a series of hugely popular of MLB, NFL and NBA titles in the 1990s and 2000s is making a comeback.

Kelce revealed on his “New Heights” podcast earlier this year that he was enquiring about acquiring the rights to reboot the games, which were a staple of his childhood.

And although the former Philadelphia Eagles star is not involved in the relaunch, he can rejoice that Backyard Sports is returning – with the same charming aesthetic that made it a smash hit with kids two decades ago.

Backyard Baseball, Backyard Football, Backyard Basketball and Backyard Soccer included an eclectic selection of fictional characters – who can forget the legendary Pablo Sanchez? – as well as a smattering of sports stars including Kevin Garnett, Jerry Rice and Ken Griffey Jr., who were shrunk down to cartoon depictions of them as children.

A teaser trailer has been released by production company Playground Productions was released on Tuesday. No release date has been confirmed, but the series will return “in the coming months” according to a press release.

“We’re incredibly excited to reintroduce Backyard Sports to a new generation of players,” Chris Waters, chief product officer at Playground Productions, said.

“We’re taking great care to preserve the look and feel that made the original games so special while updating them with modern features and gameplay that today’s audience expects. I can’t wait for fans to see what we’re building on the Playground.

Playground Productions CEO Lindsay Barnett added: “Backyard Sports is more than just a game; it’s a cherished part of childhood for millions of people. I look at media as the largest classroom in the world.

“As such, our goal is to produce meaningful content that not only entertains but also educates and inspires. The return of Backyard Sports is the perfect embodiment of that goal.”

Kelce, who retired earlier this year, made his ambitions to bring the series back in January public. He said: “I don’t even know if I want to mention this. I’ve secretly been looking into seeing if anybody holds the rights to Backyard Baseball and Backyard Football because I want to buy it and get this thing going again.”

Playground Productions confirmed in a statement to Sports Illustrated that Kelce is not involved in the project, but it welcomed his support.

“While Jason Kelce isn’t directly involved in this relaunch, he represents an audience of people that, to this day, fondly remember Backyard Sports as a staple game with iconic characters beloved by many,” a spokesman said.

“Just like Jason and the millions of other fans out there, Playground Productions recognizes the nostalgia of this franchise and is thrilled to bring it back to life to reach a new generation of players.”
