Jason Kelce recently opened up about a heated altercation between himself and his Kansas City Chiefs brother, Travis Kelce. The two NFL stars, known for their close bond on and off the field, revealed that their sibling rivalry wasn’t always as harmonious as it seems today.
On their popular New Heights podcast, the Kelce brothers often joke about their past, but Jason took a more serious tone during a guest appearance on Shaquille O’Neal’s The Big Podcast. In the interview, the Philadelphia Eagles legend recounted a rare and intense fight that took place during their childhood.

Before they became NFL icons, the Kelce brothers honed their competitive spirits at home, which sometimes led to fiery confrontations. Jason recalled one specific incident that escalated during a backyard basketball game. Frustrated by Travis consistently scoring with “stupid shots,” Jason resorted to fouling his younger brother.

“We’re out in the backyard, and he starts driving and doing these stupid shots,” Jason shared. “He’s making it every single time, and I can’t stop it. So, I fouled him because it was the only way I knew how to stop it.”
The situation quickly turned physical after Travis objected. “He says, ‘That’s bulls**t, that’s a foul.’ I said, ‘I don’t see any refs out here,’” Jason continued. “Then he takes the ball, throws it at me, and storms into the house. I followed him, grabbed him by the shoulder, and punched him.”
Jason revealed that this was only the second time he had ever hit his brother, but Travis’s reaction was unlike any before. “He took this punch, scooped me up off my feet, and slammed me on the kitchen floor so hard the oven got knocked off the tracks. We ended up in a full-on fistfight.”
Despite the intensity of their childhood brawls, the brothers have since matured and grown closer. During Jason’s retirement speech earlier this year, Travis was visibly emotional while sitting with their parents in the front row. Jason reflected on their journey from backyard football games to both being drafted into the NFL, with Jason even playing a pivotal role in convincing Chiefs coach Andy Reid to draft Travis despite his rocky college history.
Even today, the competitive spirit between the brothers remains strong, though it has shifted to playful banter rather than physical altercations. Recently, Jason humorously reacted on social media to Patrick Mahomes’ behind-the-back pass to Travis during a preseason game against the Detroit Lions, calling it “magic” and jokingly adding, “If Pat starts throwing behind-the-back passes every time Travis runs the wrong route, this may be the most exciting year of football to date.”
The Kelce brothers’ story is a testament to how sibling rivalry can evolve into a deep and enduring friendship, even if it takes a few punches along the way.
