Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel’s engagement getaway almost ended in disaster.
In a recent interview with Today.com, the Property Brothers star, 45, revealed that after a whirlwind trip to the U.K.,
where he popped the question to the actress, 43, by the foot of Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, the pair nearly left Deschanel’s ring behind.
“We took [Deschanel’s kids, Elsie and Charlie] to London, Scotland and then Paris.
So all this excitement had happened in Scotland, and we celebrated, and the next day we were traveling to Paris,” Scott recounted of the August trip.
“Great, I’m organized, I’ve got it all together, we get to the airport … when we were sitting there, I was like, ‘Oh, my God. I forgot everything in the safe at the hotel,'” he continued.
Scott explained that the Elf star wasn’t wearing her new sparkler at the time because it needed to be resized and she was “worried it was going to fall off.” So they had safely stowed the ring in the hotel safe, along with their passports, money and credit cards.

The hotel was a 25-minute drive from the airport, but their flight was scheduled to begin boarding in 40 minutes.
“I’m freaking out, like, ‘What do I do?'” he said of the dilemma. “And so I called the hotel manager, [they] went [and] got her ring, got the passports, got all the money and everything, credit cards, that were in the safe.”
The manager then informed Scott that a taxi driver would bring the items to the airport within 25 minutes — which had the HGTV star freaking out even more.
“I’m like, ‘What?!'” he recalled thinking of a complete stranger being entrusted with their valuables.
However, the hotel manager assured him that “no one is more trustworthy than cab drivers in Scotland.”
Fortunately, everything worked out in the end, and the driver safely delivered the ring and other items, just as their flight was boarding. Scott described the travel mishap as the “craziest thing,” but said he felt relieved that Deschanel’s ring had not been lost for good.
Last month, Scott opened up to PEOPLE about the engagement ring — and how he knew exactly what Deschanel was hoping for.
“She had mentioned it a while ago,” he said. “So when she had mentioned that this was a ring that she liked, I immediately screen grabbed that and held onto that for a long time — probably over a year. That was the one she got.”
The stunning ring features diamonds and pink and purple sapphires set in a delicate flower pattern. Deschanel told PEOPLE she wanted something unique and untraditional.
“I didn’t want just a diamond ring,” she explained. “There’s just so many different beautiful gemstones. It’s fun to have something different. I mean, I love diamonds, don’t get me wrong. I’m not going to turn down a diamond. But I like the fun colors and I like pink and purple.”
The New Girl star also addressed the ring’s less-than-perfect fit. “It was big for me. I didn’t wear it,” she said, prompting her fiancé to admit that he “measured badly.”
“So I said to the jeweler, I was like, ‘You know Zooey. What size?’ They’re like, ‘She is definitely a 6. She’s a 6,'” Scott said. The ring she was ultimately given was a 5.5 — but she’s actually a 4.75.
Now that it has been resized, Deschanel told PEOPLE, she is thrilled to wear it. And it’s safe to say, she won’t be leaving it in a hotel safe again anytime soon.
