Seldom do we see public displays of affection between the Prince and Princess of Wales in public. Since their 2011 wedding, William and Kate have often taken a royally understated approach to PDA, keeping their romantic on-camera moments together relatively modest (although Kate isn’t above a few love taps here and there). But, as the princess said in a newly released video, facing life’s unexpected trials together has brought them face to face with their vulnerable sides.

That much was evident in the powerful three-minute film shared to the Waleses’ social media accounts today. Filmed by Will Warr in Norfolk, England, last month, the video was Kate’s way of announcing the completion of her chemotherapy treatment amid her ongoing cancer recovery journey. It also put a spotlight on some intimate and tender moments between the couple and their kids, in ways we hardly ever get to see from the British royal family.

Kate and William’s bond was undeniable in shots of the two embracing, kissing, and holding hands. The video also captured sweet moments from their family life, with the royals spending time with their kids in Norfolk’s countryside and playing card games at home with Kate’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton.

“The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant, and we’ve had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown,” Kate says in a voiceover in the film.

She went on to explain how her diagnosis has inevitably shaped her outlook on life. “The cancer journey is complex, scary, and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you. With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you’ve never considered before, and with that, a new perspective on everything,” she said. “This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved.”

Kate concluded with another note about her and William’s gratitude for the outpouring of support they’ve received from across the globe. “William and I are so grateful for the support we’ve received and have drawn great strength from all those who are helping us at this time,” she said. “Everyone’s kindness, empathy, and compassion has been truly humbling.”
