When it comes to superstition in sports, few athletes are as candid about their rituals as Patrick Mahomes. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback recently confirmed a quirky yet surprisingly effective game-day tradition: he wears the same pair of red underwear for every NFL game. Yes, you read that correctly—the same pair.
During a guest appearance on ESPN’s ManningCast for Monday Night Football, Mahomes, 29, opened up to Peyton and Eli Manning about his ritual, explaining that it all started back in 2017, his rookie season.
“First, my wife Brittany got them for me, so I’m not throwin’ y’all down, but I have to wear ’em, ya know,” Mahomes shared with the Manning brothers, a nod to the pair’s significance beyond superstition. “At the same time, I threw ’em on that first season, and we had a pretty good season that year.”
And just like that, a superstition was born.

According to Mahomes, the underwear aren’t worn daily, but exclusively on game days. “I only wear ’em for game day, though,” he clarified, adding that despite the extended use, they are still in good condition. “They’re not too worn down or nasty,” he joked. “I clean ’em. I wash ’em. Every once in a while, at least.”
But there’s one catch—when the Chiefs are on a winning streak, Mahomes sticks to his superstition without fail. “If we’re on a hot streak, I can’t wash ’em, you know? I’ve gotta just keep it rolling,” Mahomes quipped, further cementing the idea that the lucky underwear are a key part of his game-day routine.
This revelation isn’t new to some, however. Former Chiefs backup quarterback Chad Henne first spilled the beans about Mahomes’ underwear ritual in February, giving fans an insider look into the quarterback’s game-day preparation. “He comes in, he does his work, his notes are written out a certain way. Same pair of underwear, which probably not a lot of people know, on game day,” Henne shared on The Adam Schefter Podcast. He added that the underwear are red and, though the brand is still a mystery, they’re either from Hanes or Lululemon.
“It’s definitely a superstition and a good-luck charm, for sure,” Henne confirmed.
While Mahomes’ lucky red underwear might be his personal game-day secret, he’s also getting attention for another role—modeling at-home loungewear. Mahomes and his family recently launched a holiday campaign with none other than Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS. The Mahomes clan appeared together in matching red-and-black checkered pajama sets, further proving that red is clearly a favorite color.
“This is our first campaign as a family, and shooting for SKIMS all together was an awesome moment,” Mahomes said in a press release. “I’m all about comfort, and these sets will be my go-to at home all season.”
It looks like red might just be Mahomes’ lucky color all around, from the football field to the couch. Whether it’s leading the Chiefs to victory or lounging at home, one thing’s for sure: Mahomes’ lucky red underwear are a game-day tradition he’s not about to change anytime soon!
