Red Bull’s motorsport advisor Helmut Marko suggested he is looking forwards to seeing Lewis Hamilton in Ferrari, who still has the speed, but there is a catch.

With the start of 2025, Lewis Hamilton will officially become a Scuderia Ferrari driver and Charles Leclerc’s new teammate.

When his partnership with the Italian F1 team was announced for the first time, Ferrari’s stock price increased by whooping by $4 billion.

While shareholders saw the seven-time world champion joining Ferrari as extremely positive news, not all fans and experts were convinced it was the right move for the red.

Former F1 driver Lucas di Grassi and Ferrari’s former team principal Mattia Binotto, for example, both stated that they wouldn’t have chosen the 39-year-old.

While Helmut Marko doesn’t argue if it was or if it wasn’t the right move, Red Bull’s motorsport advisor is very much looking forward to the comparison between Hamilton and Leclerc. He wrote in a column for Speedweek.com:

“We can also be excited about Lewis Hamilton in the Ferrari. He will have one of the strongest opponents in qualifying in Charles Leclerc.”
Saturdays didn’t use to be a problem for Hamilton until 2024 when he was beaten in a qualifying head-to-head battle against George Russell 6-24.

While a question mark remains over his performance on Saturdays, Helmut Marko does not doubt that the seven-time World Champion has what it takes in terms of race pace.

“In the race, he can still be world-class if the car is right. But we also saw at Mercedes that his motivation is limited if the car wasn’t very good.”
“He needs to know that he can get on the podium with it. He’s unlikely to go out of his way for a tenth place.”
Ferrari certainly was one of the fastest teams in the second half of the season. Could Hamilton fight for the championship title if the team from Maranello retains this level of performance?
