In an exciting development for Kansas City sports fans, Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany, are reportedly taking significant steps toward bringing a Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) franchise to the region.

Last week, local officials made a compelling case for why Kansas City should be included in the league’s expansion plans, and the Mahomes couple is at the forefront of these efforts.

According to sources who spoke with KSHB 41 News, members of the Kansas City Current’s ownership group, which includes the Mahomes, have met with WNBA officials to discuss the potential for a franchise in their hometown. This news was first reported by ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, further emphasizing the seriousness of the initiative.

Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and Super Bowl champion, and Brittany Mahomes are already co-owners of the Kansas City Current, the city’s National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) team. Their involvement in local sports doesn’t stop there; Mahomes also has ownership stakes in the Kansas City Royals and Sporting Kansas City, the city’s Major League Soccer (MLS) club.

Kathy Nelson, CEO and president of the Kansas City Sports Commission, expressed optimism about the current ownership group’s potential to support a WNBA team. In an interview with KSHB 41’s Elyse Schoenig, she stated, “Now it’s our time to wave our hand and show our prideful flag of, ‘We think we’re the great city for this, for that next team.’”

Nelson highlighted the success of the Kansas City Current ownership group, which includes Chris and Angie Long alongside the Mahomes, suggesting that their experience could provide the perfect foundation for a future WNBA franchise.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas also weighed in, affirming the city’s strong commitment to supporting a diverse range of sports. He pointed out that Kansas City is an exceptional market with substantial interest in women’s sports. “We have seen real money and interest and where we have consistent fan base and support,” Lucas told KSHB 41’s Charlie Keegan.

The mayor, who has attended several KC Current games at the newly built CPKC Stadium, noted the excitement and energy surrounding the team. “I think that’s something we can do a lot of throughout the year,” he added, emphasizing the community’s passion for local sports.

As discussions about WNBA expansion continue, the Mahomes’ involvement signals a promising future for women’s professional sports in Kansas City. With the backing of dedicated local leaders and a successful ownership group, the dream of a WNBA team could soon become a reality, further enriching the city’s vibrant sports culture.

The prospect of a Kansas City WNBA team represents not just a new chapter in local sports but also an opportunity to showcase the city’s dedication to empowering women athletes and fostering competitive sports at all levels.
